What is Place-Based Education?
Place-based education (PBE) is an environmentally and culturally conscious approach to education that uses the local environment and community as a context for learning. It is designed to provide students with the chance to exercise citizenship and agency, and build connections in their community.
Place-based education immerses students in local heritage, cultures, landscapes, opportunities and experiences, using these as a foundation for the study of language arts, mathematics, social studies, science and other subjects across the curriculum. PBE emphasizes learning through participation in service projects that benefit and enrich our communities.
Parent/Caregiver Resources
There is an abundance of literature and peer reviewed research on the benefits of PBE. Here are a few of our favorite resources for parents/caregivers considering this model for their children.
